Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare the sauce?

Combine 2 parts water and 1 part powder in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Many customers prefer to boil the water, then add the powder and stir quickly. Either way works fine. For a thinner sauce, add more water, a small amount at a time.

Can I use milk or milk alternatives instead of water?

Yes, though not necessary, you can use unflavored milks with or without added sugar. We don’t think it adds very much to the cheesiness or creaminess, but by all means, go ahead if you wish.

Do I need to make the whole package at once?

No, that is one of the great things about the dry powder mix. You can make only what you want to use and save the rest. Unlike an open jar of sauce, which will quickly become fuzzy in the fridge, the dry mix has a very long shelf-life. After very extended storage or in high heat conditions, the flavor may change a little bit, but it won’t go “bad.”

How much does it make?

One bag will make about two 12 ounce jars, or 3 cups of sauce, maybe more, depending on how thin or thick you make it.

Can I freeze the sauce after I make it?

Yes, it freezes just fine. Since you can make only what you need, there may not be leftovers!

How long does the powder last after I open the bag?

The powder will last 18 months or more, it won’t really go bad in the powder form. For longest shelf-life, reseal the bag and keep it in a cool, dry place.

Once I make the sauce, how long will it last?

About 5 days in the refrigerator. You can freeze it if you like.

What do you put it on?

Vegetables, rice, pasta, potatoes, sandwiches, chips, burgers — anything on which you want extra protein, nutrition and flavor! Be sure to check out the recipe page too.

Is Beyond Better Peanut-Free?

Yes our products are peanut-free. Our dedicated equipment is never used to process peanuts.

Does Beyond Better contain tropical oils like palm oil or coconut oil?

No, Beyond Better has no palm or coconut oil. Cashew nuts or sunflower seeds are the base, and are the only source of fat. The liquid is the hot water you provide. We would never use palm oil.

What’s in the bag?

The bag contains a dry powder that is full of organic cashews, non-GMO nutritional yeast, organic herbs and spices, organic tapioca starch, organic sea salt, organic acacia fiber, and a small amount of guar and xanthan gum.

What is nutritional yeast? Is it Non-GMO?

Nutritional yeast is made from a single-celled organism, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, which is usually grown in a beet sugar medium and then harvested, washed, and dried with heat to kill or “deactivate” it. Because it’s inactive, it doesn’t froth or grow like baking yeast and has no leavening ability. Nutritional yeast is not the same as brewer’s yeast, which is a product of the beer-making process and is very bitter. It’s also not Torula yeast, which is grown on paper-mill waste. Our nutritional yeast is imported from Estonia, so it can be certified Non-GMO, as it cannot have been grown on GMO beet sugar. It is not certified organic, however, because the yeast has been fed a fortified broth containing B vitamins, which are considered an “additive”. Others argue that the yeast cell consumes the B12 and it becomes part of the yeast cell, so is not an additive.

Does nutritional yeast contain MSG?

No. MSG is monosodium glutamate. Yeast extract, a processed form of yeast, is another name for MSG. Nutritional Yeast, however, is a completely natural food that contains free glutamic acid, one of the 22 essential amino acids that are the building blocks your body needs to make proteins.

What are Guar and Xanthan and why are they used?

Guar is the ground endosperm of a guar bean, which grow on Guar trees in India. Xanthan is the coating on a commonplace bacteria; it attracts water molecules and helps bind things together. These two natural ingredients are specially pre-combined so that it takes very little of either one to ensure that the sauce will stay saucy if you add things to it that are very acidic: think tomatoes, salsa, lemon juice.

What is Acacia Fiber?

Acacia fiber is a type of soluble fiber sourced from the sap of the Acacia senegal tree, a plant native to parts of Africa, Pakistan, and India. Acacia fiber is said to offer a number of health benefits. It is a prebiotic, meaning it promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut, promoting a healthy immune system.

Due to its high content of soluble fiber, acacia fiber is thought to help lower cholesterol levels, keep blood sugar in check, protect against diabetes, and aid in the treatment of digestive disorders (including irritable bowel syndrome). In addition, acacia fiber is said to suppress appetite and support weight loss efforts, reduce inflammation, alleviate constipation and diarrhea.

Can I take it camping? Carry it on the plane?

Yes, you can. It goes where you go. As long as it is in the powder form it is non-perishable. And since its not a liquid, you can carry it on the plane. Take it traveling, camping, to your friends house. You just need the boiling water for instant nutrition and flavor.

Is Beyond Better good for athletes? How about vegan diets?

Beyond Better is great for vegan diets because it has 90% of daily B12, lots of other B vitamins. Plus, athletes love that it is high in zinc, magnesium, manganese, copper, selenium, and lots of nutrients that are great for muscle recovery. It contains 6 grams of protein in every serving, a good balance of omega 3 and 6 from the cashew fats.

Can I sprinkle the powder on my food?

Lots of people do this! We didn’t create the powder for this purpose but folks tell us that the Original and the Spicy Queso are great on lots of foods, like rice, pasta, salads and avocado sandwiches!

Do these contain Onion or Bell Pepper?

All four flavors contain organic onion powder, and the Spicy Queso and Zesty Black Bean flavors contain organic red bell peppers.

Is the Spicy Queso really spicy?

We call it a healthy medium spice. If it’s a little too much for a particular recipe, combine part Spicy Queso with part Original Cashew. It’s about flavor! The Zesty Black Bean is less spicy, bursting with the cool deliciousness of cumin and cilantro, with just a hint of jalapeno.
